The Academy aims to transform the lives of young, talented dancers who would not otherwise have the opportunity by offering free places on a three year course. Students join the Academy at the age of 15 or 16 and train to develop their technique in ballet and allied dance genres, broadening their experience and allowing them to pursue their dreams.
Where are we?
The Academy is located in the central Vedado neighbourhood of Havana, close to many of the city’s main theatres and cultural venues. It shares a building with Carlos’ dance company (Acosta Danza) occupying a newly renovated separate space that comprises a dance studio, classrooms and ancillary areas. To the rear of the site a further studio/performance theatre is under construction together with new rest and dining facilities.
Developing talent
The Academy’s training curriculum is rooted in the original Cuban ballet method but also includes innovative elements that have not previously formed part of a classical ballet dancer’s training. There is a large contemporary dance component as well as folkloric dance that draws on Cuba’s rich Spanish and African heritages. The Academy will produce dancers that are as confident and competent in performing classical ballet as they are contemporary and folkloric dance, and possess the skill to perform choreographies that are a fusion of all three. This unique approach responds to Carlos’ vision for the evolution of the art form as a new generation of dancers takes it forward in the 21st Century.
The link with Acosta Danza
The Academy naturally enjoys a close relationship with Acosta Danza, Carlos’ dance company which is based on the same site. The professional dancers inspire and guide the students, offering them training opportunities and the chance to perform in joint artistic activities. The students also meet and interact with artists and teachers of international renown who visit and hold master classes for Acosta Danza. Upon graduation, the most talented students dancers can aspire to join the company itself, or explore other professional opportunities within the global dance community.
